Archer had no idea why Angel was angry with him. He had thought Angel would be happy to see him up and moving so he could go home. If Archer knew nothing else, he knew Angel couldn’t wait to be done with him. Yet Angel's eyes kept flashing with a combination of fury and hurt. He also thought he saw a hint of lust, but that was probably wishful thinking.

Dutifully, Archer eased back into bed. He leaned against the pillows Angel had arranged for him. Angel snagged the tray and carried it to the bed. “You had a vast variety of foods to choose from, so I didn’t know what you would want.”

“A lot of people work and live here. That means keeping a lot of food stocked. You could’ve just asked Cree to get the chef for you.”

“You have a chef.” It wasn’t a question. It was more of a dry repeating of his words.

Still, Archer answered, “Yes. There’s usually a meal plan in place, but—likely since I’m down—they chose not to disturb us with breakfast.”

“Wow.”

Archer didn’t know how to decode Angel’s tone. “It’s a job. Some people need to work, especially people who came from a similar background as me.”

Angel smiled. “I didn’t mean it that way. It’s more that I didn’t realize how much I don’t know you at all. I don’t begrudge you anything.” Before Archer could reply, Angel sat at his hip and rearranged the plate, moving the food closer. “Like I said, I didn’t know what to make, so you have toast with jelly, bacon, and eggs.”

“Ask me then,” Archer said, interrupting him.

Angel’s gaze moved to hold his stare. “Ask you what?”

“About me. If you don’t think you know me, ask.”

“Okay. How did you end up in the same training camp as Seven?”

Archer knew he was digging. It was obvious Angel didn’t know that for sure, and it was the last thing he wanted to talk about, but he would. “I’m surprised you know that about Seven.” He cleared his throat. “We weren’t there at the same time since I’m older than him. But the answer is, I don’t know. Well, I don’t remember. From what I’ve pieced together over the years, I was born in Romania and was snatched from my family there.” He took a bite of the toast so he wouldn’t say more. Even though he had opened this door, that didn’t mean he liked it.

“How did you go from that training program to owning all of this?”

Archer sipped his coffee. It was perfect. Angel knew him better than he thought. “All of this.” He set the cup aside and motioned at their surroundings. “I got from marriage.”

“I didn’t know you were married.”

Archer nodded. He took another bite before responding. “His name was Wesley. He bought me from the training program. Even though I really wasn’t much more than a slave, I suppose he loved me in his way. He didn’t leave me empty-handed.”

“Did you love him?”

The question caught him off guard.
